This paper situates Brazil’s National Museum fire in a broader analysis of the relationship between political economy, state formation, and cultural patrimony. That the neoliberal turn has seen the commons eviscerated by design has profound implications for the preservation of historical archival materials. The paper, therefore, explores the challenges and possibilities for the future of knowledge production.
