Scottish Covenanters and the supporters of King Charles I sought to construct competing ideas of loyalty in terms of virtuous masculinity. Using political tracts, as well as Covenanter investigations into ‘malignancy’, this contribution considers how the female voice could be used both to reinforce and subvert these constructions.
