Treason in the Family: Representing the Hothams

Prior to his execution for treason, the parliamentary turncoat John Hotham was said to have “dreamed that he and his son changed wives.” This paper explores the highly gendered imagery surrounding the Hothams for what it reveals about the relationship between manhood, loyalty, the public and the private.
