The history of Mormon nationalism helps us to think more expansively about the interrelationship of religion and national loyalties. In particular, this example demonstrates that not all Americans arrived at the same understandings of the forces uniting land, people, history, and government. Multiple “nationalisms” coexist and must be accounted for.
