Session Abstract

Roudtable discussion of Thomas C. Holt's landmark book of imperial and post-emancipation history, The Problem of Freedom: Race, Labor, and Politics in Jamaica and Britain, 1832-1938 (1992). In honor of the 25th anniversary of its publication, participants working on different geographic areas will discuss the significance of Holt's book for their respective fields, their own research, and/or the intellectual and political challenges of our present moment.
