This presentation uses an account booklet kept by a group of tax collectors at customs stations in Greater Poland to record smuggled goods and general tax accounts from the same period and region. It compares three methods for presenting the source: a traditional print edition, a digital edition using the Guidelines of the Text Encoding Initiative, and the method of editing without transcription that is currently used by the Department of Historical Atlas at the Institute for History at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Factors to be considered include time and labor requirements, extent of usefulness for other researchers, editorial skills required, and necessary equipment.
