Session Abstract

This session will present a retrospective of Ghana and India of their independent movements. These two countries share the distinction of being the first on their continents to win their freedom from British colonial rule. Led by their respective Prime Ministers, these countries were in the forefront in challenging colonial rule not only in their own countries but championing the cause of decolonization outside their nations. The role of the Bandung Conference in Indonesia in 1955 and how it influenced the decolonization movements in various parts of Asia and Africa will also be examined.
