Morts pour la France: Do Demographic Factors Alone Explain the Regional Disparities of the Great War? Crossing data from the 'Morts pour la France' database (French Ministry of Defense) with the 1911 census, this study examines the regional disparities in the number of military deaths in France during WW1. The analysis is carried out using a macroeconometric model. While demographic factors are the main determinants, economic, political, and locally significant factors also contribute to explain differences between regions in the number of dead.
