Using Decoding the Disciplines to Bridge the Gap between Outcomes and the Actual Learning of Students
Friday, January 8, 2016: 9:10 AM
Grand Hall D (Hyatt Regency Atlanta)
The work of the scholarship of teaching and learning, in general, and of the History Learning Project in particular can be of great practical value in realizing the promise of Tuning. Outcomes can be decoded and broken down into a set of essential mental operations that students must master to succeed in history courses. Strategies can be devised for modeling each of these ways of operating and for giving students practice at them. The extent to which each of these skills has been actually mastered can be assessed to produce clear evidence of the extent to which a particular outcome has, in fact, been realized.
Examples of this process from a variety of history courses will be shared, and the participants in the session will have an opportunity to observe a Decoding interview in real time.
