Teaching Strategies for Secondary Source Analysis
Friday, January 8, 2016: 9:10 AM
Grand Ballroom C (Hilton Atlanta)
This session will focus on strategies for teaching extended analysis of secondary sources, leading students through progressively more challenging tasks: summarize the author’s main point; contextualize the author’s argument; analyze the author’s point-of-view, purpose, and audience; describe and evaluate the author’s argument and evidence, compare the author’s argument to other sources and/or historian’s interpretations. The presentation will model how to work with students in small groups, leading them through each of these steps to arrive at a deep and comprehensive analysis of a secondary source.
