David Carey, Jr., Loyola University Maryland
David Carey will evaluate the control of agricultural production and exports by large-scale landowners to the detriment of small-scale farmers.  He particularly will discuss the effects of military conscription, inadequate mechanization, and environmental challenges that prevent farmers from producing for local, regional, and national markets.  Political decisions have privileged large-scale landowners who emphasize production for a market economy.  Small-scale farmers struggle to meet their subsistence needs.  The qualified benefits of the Green Revolution have not reached Guatemala.
