Periodizing the “Long Nineteenth Century” in the AP World History Survey
Friday, January 2, 2015: 1:40 PM
Sutton Center (New York Hilton)
Participants will learn how to build students’ knowledge of the concepts of periodization and historiography as they relate to the study and practice of world history. After examining a selection of secondary source materials drawn from the American Historical Review and Hobsbaum’s The Age of Revolution series, teachers will experience and critique a formative and summative assessment designed to test students’ ability to evaluate different approaches to periodizing the “Long 19th century” in world history from 1789-1914. During the session, the facilitator will draw clear connections to the AP World History Curriculum Framework and model sample test items before leading participants in a summary discussion about how materials can be aligned with best practices in their own schools and classrooms.
