This paper takes up some methodological issues connected with writing about the Great Divergence in light of the anthropocene. Some of the questions it will raise include: How does not knowing the end of history reshape our approach to the great divergence? How does the anthropocene reshape the value judgments that often inform the debate on the great divergence? What is at stake in seeing Europe as exceptional?
