The emergent field of sound studies has garnered significant scholarly attention in recent years.  It is useful to explore the shifting relationships—in terms of methodology, disciplinarity, subject matter, or hip factor—between sound studies and more evenly tempered creatures such as musicology, ethnomusicology, and popular music studies.
