Universal Design/Differentiated Instruction: Two Approaches to Engaged Learning

Sunday, January 4, 2015: 11:30 AM
Sutton Center (New York Hilton)
Miguel Alonso, Nassau Community College
This presentation will discuss two basic approaches to teaching in community colleges that speak to the numerous academic and social challenges we all face in our classrooms and which can be utilized across a wide range of courses. These approaches are universal design and differentiated instruction. The use of these methodologies has resulted in a demonstrable increase in interest among students as they were given opportunities to use their own areas of strength and interest to express what they learned, and has transformed passive learners into excited and engaged learners.
