Freda Kirchwey’s Nation: The War in Europe and Its Aftermath, 1937–55

Historian Sara Alpern, author of Freda Kirchwey: A Woman of The Nation, will look at the positions on international issues undertaken by The Nation under the direction of Freda Kirchwey, editor and publisher from 1937 – 1955. Under Kirchwey’s leadership, the journal published Philip Bernstein’s influential series on the fate of European Jews during the early days of the Holocaust. Kirchwey’s advocacy for both the establishment of the state of Israel and the United Nations will also be examined.
