Revisiting Silver Mining and Its Many Societies in New Spain

Peter Bakewell’s foundational study (1971) reminded us of that silver mining engendered more than just metals, creating societies and settlements in its wake. This talk revisits the creation and evolution of non-Spanish societies in New Spain’s northern silver mining district in light of recent scholarship, focusing particularly on indigenous peoples and African descended men and women.
