This presentation will examine the role of critique in the burgeoning field of the history of emotions (featured in last December’s AHR Conversation). It will attempt to situate the field both historiographically and in relation to its time in order to better understand its current popularity and limitations.  The paper will in turn consider the opportunity of integrating critical social theory and its works of historical social psychology to the dominant cognitive and anthropological approach to the historical study of emotions.
