An exploration of the origins and trajectories of several of the labels that have been used to

designate ethnic or cultural groups descended in various ways from the Iberian presence in

the western hemisphere. Historical approaches are contrasted with pressures arising from

more recent identity politics to track the contentious convergence of competing terms.
