Relating Intellectual and Cultural History

This contribution will discuss the historically fraught relationship between intellectual and cultural history, examining missed moments, common aims, and mutual departures. In particular, the talk with argue for a logic of complementarity, in which attempts to distinguish the fields have value in part as they are always undoing themselves. Attention to the cultural turn, in particular shows how the attempt to distinguish particular fields fails, though sometimes in productive ways.
