This paper will take the concept of the big tent, most familiar to modern politics, and explore how and why it is beneficial to reconceptualize historical training and practice to reach a wider, more diverse audience. Focusing on how fiction has provided me with new opportunities for historical understanding, teaching, and writing, I will talk about my experiences with readers and other writers.
