This presentation will provide an overview of fellowship and grant application processes from the perspective of a long-serving and recently-retired professor, application reviewer, and library research director. Dr. Ritchie will seek to contextualize the experiences of his co-panelists by providing a sense of what consistently captures and sustains the positive attention of selection committees. Particular issues may include how to frame and focus your application, strengthen you recommendation letters, and get the most out of such a research award when you get it. In addition, Dr. Ritchie will speak from an experienced perspective on how fellowship and grant competitions can fit into an academic career trajectory, professional development, and the changing realities of the job market for early career historians.
