This paper will compare the experiences of two key elite merchant/creditor networks in the late colonial period, those of Guadalajara and Buenos Aires. While the focus of the paper is on the Guadalajara consulado, some comparisons are made with Buenos Aires to highlight the different opportunities and challenges faced in the late imperial world as globalizing forces (mainly non-Spanish goods and capital) disrupted a previously more closed circuit of trade and finance.
