Van Gosse: Abstract

The recent financial crisis has revealed serious questions about the scholarly integrity of several major disciplines, including economics and business, and in turn the major research institutions that credential those departments and schools. Why are there no codes of conduct regulating conflicts of interest and mandating disclosure of scholarship-for-hire in these disciplines? What are the consequences for higher education as a whole when leading academics become privately wealthy through the sale of their services, and thus the imprimatur of their institutions and disciplines, with no oversight?
