A Long View: Graduate Education in America

Axtell will briefly describe the history of graduate education in the U.S., the impact (often exaggerated) of the German universities, the role of America's newly emergent research universities between 1890 and 1920, the proliferation and specialization of doctoral programs since then, and their changing emphases upon teaching and research, by preaching and practice.
