This presentation will not be a paper or a lecture, but a chance to experience some of the lessons from the Blueprint Civil War unit as a participant. Hale and Peckham will guide the audience through an eighth-grade lesson analyzing multiple perspectives on emancipation, including excerpts from Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and slave narratives. They will show how they teach using historical investigation questions and arguments to frame content from the textbooks, digital media, visuals, and primary sources. They will distribute and demonstrate strategies for helping students with low reading skills access and analyze difficult primary sources, as they guide the audience through the lessons.
