Nancy F. Cott will reflect on the challenges that face historians who value nuance and ambiguity when they engage in debates that value absolute certainty. She was one of the two lead authors in the first historians' brief in a same sex marriage case (Goodridge v Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and has offered extended depositions in a number of same-sex marriage cases, including those in Washington and in Iowa.
