This contribution will survey the ways in which university participation in school-university partnerships can prompt a discussion of the mission of the research university and its relationship to the larger community that surrounds it. The paper emphasizes that K-12-university partnerships define a two-way street. Traveling along it allows university-based historians to gain insights into their own pedagogical practice and develop graduate training programs that prepare students for entry into four-year college teaching jobs at universities that place particular emphasis on teacher-preparation and credentialing.
