This paper examines King Kalakaua's World Tour of 1881 and the global, political and cultural connections made through this journey. Both the King's status as a ruler of a modern nation as well as his membership in the brotherhood of Freemason's provided him with many prominent contacts in the various locations he visited. This paper works toward an analysis of the expansion of his intellectual interests as fostered by this trip and how they affected the Kingdom's political and cultural environment.
