From Aristotle to Benedict Anderson, theorists have posited that loyalty to country stems from love, that amor patri lies at the root of nationalism.  Yet historians have been slow to examine the historical variability of such love, the means by which private feelings have been channeled into public action. How have theories of political economy and theories of personality developed together over time?  How have changes in individual psychology contributed to shifts in national political culture?
