This paper considers the way in which academic writing about the visual culture of the British West Indies has been affected or driven by exhibitions organized around the topic of slavery.  I will consider the tensions that arise because of the different demands placed on those involved in the production and display of public history and on those producing scholarship often “disciplined” around different imperatives.
