Murray Hill Suite B (Hilton New York)
I will be reading in advance the papers of Reza Pirbhai and Suzanne Marchand, and offering specific ideas and strategies, based on their scholarship, about teaching World War I as a site of encounter between Europe and the Muslim World. My central pedagogical goal will be to destabilize the tendency to teach world history in terms of distinct “world cultures” or “civilizations,” and help teachers understand the possibilities for teaching world history in terms of sites of encounter and cultural production. The strategies I present will be compatible with the New York State history standards for K12 education.
