Jay Winter's presentation, "Memory Studies at the Divide between Public History And Academic History," explores how the place of memory studies within and outside the academy is both conflictual and symbiotic. He argues that while the same rigorous standards must be applied in both cases, problems persist in identifying who memory belongs to and how it differs from history. Winter devotes particular attention to his experience in designing a museum and research centre -- the Historial de la grande guerre, an international museum of the First World War in France.
