The U.S. military and marriage have grown closer since
the end of conscription and the rise of the permanent, all-volunteer force;
the armed forces have adopted family-friendly policies, aware of the need
to retain and recruit service members with spouses and children. This
comment explores why the personnel policies and marriage restrictions that
distinguish, and punish, gay and lesbian soldiers and citizens have been
challenged without acknowledging this connection.
