The challenge of a truly modern chronology has been addressed by several world or global historians recently. My particular interest is the validity of an "early modern" concept for global narrative. I would argue that it is useful and coherent, offers a possible understanding of a global political history, but is fraught with contradictions that, if considered systematically, may open the way to more satisfying and more globally relevant chronological schemes.
